With the amateur radio contesting session just about to get into full swing, on the 1st of June 2016 Ken VK2BBQ (SGARS Contest Manager) will be speaking about contesting techniques and discussing the more poignant aspect of portable operations from a practical point of view.

Contesting is an excellent way for new amateur radio operators or those returning to the hobby, to gain some operating experiencing without the fear finding something to talk about. In a contest, contacts between stations are very structured with exchange of callsign, signal reports and usually a serial number.

Following Ken's presentation is the Worked All VK Shires contest, held on the Queens Birthday weekend, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June 2016. The contest modes are SSB and CW on all HF bands available to Standard licensees. There are a number of categories for single and multiple operators, including a category for Foundation licensees. You can hear Ken's presentation at the SGARS club rooms in Connells Point (near South Hurstville) from 7.30 PM local time.

The SGARS 80m Throphy Contest follows at the end of June 2016. For a summary of VK amateur radio contests for 2016 click here
