Anzac Day QSO Party 25th April 2021
Last year many amateur radio operators not only miss out on catching up with friends at their local amateur radio club gatherings, but were not able to attend an ANZAC Day service. To help overcome those restrictions, the St George Amateur Radio Society sponsored a QSO Party on Anzac Day 2020.
This event was very popular with many amateurs; local, interstate and overseas. St. George Amateur Radio Society have decided to hold the ANZAC Day QSO Party again this year on Sunday 25th April 2021.
The intention of the QSO party is for amateur radio operators to keep in contact “on air” with fellow operators, and to recognise the service of many amateur radio operators from both sides of the Tasman Sea, in defending our freedom.
The Anzac Day QSO Party commences at 3pm local Sydney time, and concludes at 9.00pm. Bands and modes of communication are 40m and 80m SSB, VK2RLE and VK2RDX 2m VHF FM repeaters and the VK DMR network.
The QSO Party is open to all amateur radio operators with a participation certificate available, which recognises of the aims of this event. Amateurs are reminded that all VK amateurs can use the AX prefix on ANZAC Day.

The Don Edwards Memorial Slow Morse contest
Several weeks ago the St. George Amateur Radio Society lost one of it's longest active members, Don Edwards VK2NV. Don was a very keen CW operator, encouraging other amateurs to get out their keys and get on the air with Morse.
In recognition of Don, the St. George Amateur Radio Society will be holding the "Don Edwards Memorial slow Morse contest" on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of May.
The contest will be in two sections, 80 metres on the Saturday evening and 40 metres on the Sunday afternoon. The contest is open to all VK Amateurs who can enter either or both sessions.
Many amateurs have rarely or never used Morse code since they passed their exam or never needed to learn Morse code for their licences. This contest is to encourage inexperienced or rusty operators to try their hand or fist at Morse. For this reason, the contest will be a "Slow Morse contest" with a speed limit of 10 words per minute, no keyboards or screens - all sent by hand and received by ear.
The contest also encourages those amateurs who never sat for or passed a Morse exam for their licence, so if you have been looking for an excuse to get out the Morse key then this is your opportunity.

SGARS Activities - COVID19 July 2020 Update
Due to the unprecedented impact of the COVID19 (corona virus) on the community, this risk to the health of members and visitors and government restrictions related to groups of people, The St George Amateur Radio Society (SGARS) has taken the decision to cancel our regular monthly face to face gatherings for the foreseeable future.
Good news is our monthly presentations are now being held on line using the Google Meet facility. Details of each monthly presentation can be found above with details of how to virtually attend using video and audio or dial in for audio only.
SGARS members and all amateur radio operators are encouraged to stay in contact with each other. The VK2RLE 2m FM repeater and Echo Link connection, is fully operational and you are welcome to call into our net every Thursday evening commencing at 8.00 PM local time on 146.800 MHz.

Licence Training & Assessment 2020 - COVID19 Update
Obtaining an amateur radio licence is easy with the Foundation entry level accreditation. There is no morse code to learn, you don't need technical qualifications and there are no age limits.
The St George Amateur Radio Society (SGARS) will be holding weekend amateur radio licence training courses and assessments throughout 2020, within the St George/Sutherland Shire.
NOTE: on instruction from the UTAS-AMC, all face-to-face amateur assessments will cease as of 23 March 2020 and as such our next planned training and assessment weekend for May will not occur – a decision regarding our other planned courses will be made at an appropriate time in the future.
Face to face training course for the Foundation level licence is provided on the Saturday.
Assessments for foundation, standard and advanced level licences are held on the Sunday, by our assessors, authorised by the AMC Amateur Radio Office.
Weekend licence training courses and assessments have been scheduled for the following dates;
