There are many myths about radio propagation via the ionosphere. But sporadic E seems to attract the lion's share of myth and mystery. No doubt its capricious behaviour encourages that - propagation opens and closes suddenly; it might last for minutes or many hours; it will persist for days and then not reappear for a week.

Sporadic E is responsible for those 60dB-over-9 short-skip signals on 40 metres through to two metres every summer. And multi-hop sporadic E will get you some exciting DX out to 10,000 km on 10 and 6 metres . . . maybe more.

But what the world once thought about how sporadic E propagation worked has been turned on its head.

At the November St George Amateur Radio Society meeting, Roger Harrison VK2ZRH shares the results of his recent research to give us the low down on the hows, the whys and the wherefores of sporadic E propagation - from HF to UHF ! Hear all about it, with Roger's usual mix of art, science, technology and tomfoolery.
