SGARS will be holding a Radio Orienteering "fox hunting" event of the weekend, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April 2025, in Lidsdale State Forest near Wallerawang about 2.5 hours west of Sydney. The aim of the event is for radio operators to team up with members of the Land Rover Owners Club, and head into the forest in 4 wheel drive vehicles to find the hidden radio transmitters.
The event will be based around the camp site at Cox's River, which is accessable by two wheel drive vehicles. Radio operators are welcome to participate on Saturday only or stay overnight at the campsite. There are NO facilities at the campsite, however a gas BBQ will be provided for cooking.
Radio operators should arrive by 10.00 am on Saturday morning. Access to Lidsdale State Forest is via Link Road, off the Great Western Highway A32, about about 5.9 kms west of the junction with the Castlereagh Highway. The following link shows a pin at the Link Road junction on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/LgbyhgGr9usvUP6r9 Talk in to the campsite will be on the Mt Bindo 2m FM repeater 146.650 MHz with minus 600 kHz offset and 91.5 Hz CTCSS.
What to bring, in addition to your 2m fox hunting equipment (receiver, antenna, antenuator, compass, spare battery, etc.), what ever you need to keep yourself hydrated and sustained during the day. At the end of Saturday, you have the option to return home, or camp out for restful night's sleep ready for more fox hunting on Sunday morning. Staying overnight, you will need food and drink to sustain you until after lunch on Sunday, bedding for Saturday night such as sleeping bag, swap, tent, air matress etc. Overnight temperatures could drop to 10 deg C and be prepared for rain. Torch or headlight would be an advantage, plus a roll of toilet paper and a shovel. Don't forget any medication you need or may require, plus sunscreen and insect repellant.
After lunch, return home after enjoying a radio activity with a difference.
The event rules will be formulated to accommodate fox hunters with skill levels from beginners upwards. Operating frequencies to be advised. For more information please contact the event coordinator Tony VK2ALE by email to
